Man held over car park rape

A MAN has been charged over the rape of a woman in a Townsville car park.

The 25-year-old Kedron man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was taken into custody on Friday after a three-month investigat­ion by Townsville detectives.

Police will allege the man raped a woman in a car at Flinders St in May.

It will be alleged the pair were strangers and met at a nightclub before he allegedly raped the woman in a nearby car about 3am.

Since the incident, the man moved to Brisbane.

The man was arrested in Brisbane on Friday morning.

The man has played in local Townsville cricket competitio­ns.

He has been charged with one count of rape and has been released on bail.

The man is due to face Townsville Magistrate­s Court next month.

Under Queensland law, it is illegal to identify a defendant charged with sexual assault before their matter has been referred to a higher court.
