Legacy steps up for families

Community lends support to Defence

- EVAN MORGAN

THE Townsville community is once again digging deep to help during Legacy Week.

This year Legacy is celebrating its 75th year of supporting local families who are dependants of veterans who have given their life or served with the Australian Defence Force.

Last year up to $100,000 was raised during Legacy Week for those in need in the Townsville region.

Legacy Townsville CEO Nicole Hayes said Defence was an important part of the Townsville community.

“Legacy and the role that we play in supporting those who are left behind is an extremely important part of the fabric of our community,” Ms Hayes said.

“The Townsville community has always been supportive and last year even during Covid we had the best Legacy fundraising year we have had for many years.”

She said Legacy currently had about 650 registered Legacy beneficiaries in the Townsville region ranging from four years old to 100 years old.

“We have around 130 ladies who are aged between 90 and 100 years old.”

Ms Hayes said there were 15 stores around the Townsville region where people could either make a donation or purchase one of the mechanised products.

“They will be at all of the key shopping centres around Townsville and there are also stores in Ingham, Bowen and Charters Towers.

“Or you can go online and donate through the Legacy Australian website and put in the 4810 postcode so it comes directly back to the local area.”

She said the Townsville people were supportive of Legacy because they saw the value that those in Defence gave.

“We are an integral part of their lives and they support each other and the community supports them.”

Legacy Week finishes on Saturday, September 4.
