DOCTOR ISSUES WARNING

- LEIGHTON SMITH

THERE is no safe option when it comes to taking illicit drugs.

That was the message from Townsville University Hospital Emergency Department director Luke Lawton on Monday.

“All illicit drug use is a risk, and it is dangerous to take unknown and potentially toxic substances. The only safe option is to not take them at all,” Dr Lawton said.

“Drug overdose can occur from a range of drugs including illicit substances as well as other nonillicit drugs such as antidepressants.

“There are many harmful effects of drug use, these vary depending on the drug, but include aggressive behaviour, altered level of consciousness, seizures, coma, and severe disruption of body temperature.”

He said support was available for people dealing with drug use through the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service, the Salvation Army’s Recovery Services, and other local support services.

“General practitioners can also help people to identify services that support people with drug use,” he said.
