TEEN HERO CALM IN CRISIS

- BRIANNA TRAVERS

A VICTORIAN teen has been hailed a hero after he calmly called triple-zero to help save his sister’s life.

Will Landers, aged 13 at the time, sprung into action when his younger sister Eliza was struggling to breathe by calling triple-0, calmly taking instructions for his panicked family to follow.

It was invaluable help for his mum Rebecca, who was helping to nurse her youngest child.

“I freaked out but Will calmed me down,” Ms Landers said. “He stepped up under pressure, he was amazing. He made a situation where I was scared and unsure a lot easier to manage.”

Eliza was coughing violently and was struggling to breathe, with her lips turning blue.

Will, now a year 9 student, said it was a “scary” situation to be in.

“Dad wasn’t home, so Mum had to hold her and I called the ambulance,” he said. “It was very stressful and scary.”

Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority call taker Nick Buruma said Will was “incredible”.

“He showed maturity beyond his years,” Mr Buruma said.
