Shaw up for bout of career

- NICK WRIGHT

RISING boxing star Tyler Shaw says her training camps have completely evolved in a bid to defend her Queensland title.

The teenage sensation will have a vocal home crowd behind her on Friday night when the state championships get under way at the Townsville Showgrounds, hungrier and more determined than ever before to impress in the ring.

Typically Shaw will train most days, but with a professional debut on her horizons for 2022 she has upped the ante in recent times.

Now she has added extensive gym sessions and early morning sprints into her regimen, all while balancing two jobs and schoolwork.

Every afternoon Shaw will be sparring and doing bag work with her coach, Dennis Clancy, before setting about completing assignments and working shifts.

As difficult as she said it could be, ultimately for her to realise her goals they were necessary sacrifices.

“I’ve done ( my camp) very different actually. Usually I do my own thing in the morning, but I’ve been training twice a day and adding gym sessions in the morning for strength and conditioning,” Shaw said.

“It wasn’t really me (making the decision), it was more my trainer Dennis and I trust in him so I’m feeling good and ready to go.

“It’s really challenging. I’ll find myself staying up really late doing assignments to get them in on time because my schedule is so hectic.”

Shaw will weigh in with other competitors from across the state on Friday. Whether she contests the elimination stages before Saturday’s finals will depend on who steps up to the plate on the day.

Should the 18-year-old emerge victorious, she will challenge for the National Titles in November, provided Covid-19 restrictions ease.
