Vunivalu eyeing off international debut

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

CROSS-CODE flyer Suliasi Vunivalu has already set the crowd alight at Queensland Country Bank Stadium once this year.

He was part of a Queensland Reds side that shocked the world when they downed Super Rugby Aotearoa rivals the Chiefs 40-34 in May.

Now Vunivalu has hinted he could be in line for a return to the state-of-the-art venue, and in turn finally make his debut for the Wallabies.

The Melbourne Storm premiership winner has been on the radar of Wallabies coach Dave Rennie since making the switch back to the 15man code he played as a kid.

But a hamstring injury has kept him sidelined from the Bledisloe Cup with Rennie opting for a young backline against the All Blacks.

Vunivalu has declared he is only a couple of weeks away from being back to full fitness, and after he talked with Rennie last week, could be in line to join the squad for the Rugby Championship.

The Rugby Championship, which includes the Wallabies, All Blacks, South African Springboks and Argentina, will be played entirely in Queensland including a double header at Townsville’s

Queensland Country Bank Stadium on September 25.

“It is really exciting, it is good for Australian rugby to be getting that home advantage but it is also good for the Queensland rugby fans, you are getting the four countries playing in the one state,” Vunivalu said.

“We have a big fan base here and if we can get that support behind the boys it would be fantastic.”
