CANETOADS FINISH AS WOODEN SPOONERS

- SATRIA DYER-DARMAWAN

DESPITE finishing last in the Townsville and District Rugby Union First Grade competition, the Burdekin Canetoads were able to come away with their heads held high with a victory over Charters Towers in the last game of the season.

With rugby union finals under way, Canetoads coach Rowland Holmes said he was proud of his team’s performances and said it was a challenging season having to rebuild the team after Covid.

“The side was a very young side, most of our players were 18-19, so it was building their skills and stamina up to the intensity of the first grade competition,” Holmes said.

“There were a number of them that have been playing A grade the last two years. This was the first year where they were completely in the senior comp and they had to adjust to the intensity and physicality.”

Holmes said he was impressed with his squad’s work ethic and the fact they continued to show up for training despite heavy losses early in the season.

“As the season wore on we were able to reduce the margin of our losses and towards the end recorded a couple of wins,” he said. The Canetoads finished the season in last place with 12 points, having won three games, and losing fifteen throughout the season.
