ARTIST’S WAVE OF OPTIMISM

- SHAYLA BULLOCH

A TALENTED boat builder has been selected to show off his work at the state’s biggest art exhibition.

John Nesirky packed his massive plywood, fibreglass and glass sculpture in his trailer on Thursday and made the trip to the Gold Coast, where his work will be exhibited at SWELL

Sculpture Festival.

Mr Nesirky’s artwork, Standing Wave 2, is his response to a changed world.

The Townsville man says the pandemic has made changes to our lives and vocabularies, and he’s hoping to reclaim the word “wave”.

“For the past 18 months our nation has used the word ‘wave’ with the pandemic – the second wave or another wave of Covid cases. I’d like the word wave to have a hopeful and beautiful meaning,” he says.

Standing Wave 2 is a large-scale wave split into 20 sections, which represent different kinds of waves.

Mr Nesirky’s piece will stand beside other works on Currumbin Beach.

Festival artist director and curator Natasha Edwards says it was shaping up to be the best event yet.

“It has been a rollercoaster ride this year and … we’ve come to realise in times like these getting outdoors, creating – and enjoying – art is more important than ever,” Ms Edwards says.

The event will run from September 10 to 19.
