Short puts Lions top of ladder

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

OWNER turned provider for the EV2 Lions as the black brigade stormed to the top of the Mendi Tropical Big Bash ladder.

Emu Sportswear owner John Short, who was the first franchise buyer for the inaugural tournament, became the tournament’s first bowler to take a five-wicket-haul at the weekend.

The crafty veteran had the Reldas Ringers in a spin on Saturday afternoon, as he took 5-12 from four overs to tear through the lower order.

The Ringers were all out for 73 before Cooper Guest (36 not out) and Craig Mcelligott (27 not out) made short work of the run chase in a nine-wicket win for the Lions.

Guest would again turn up trumps for the Lions on Sunday, as the side chased down Gold City Bulls’ total of 5-79 with four overs to spare.

The Lions now sit a win clear of both the Bulls and Wildcatz Indoor Sports who both finished with a win and a loss for the weekend.

The Ringers are languishing in last spot on the ladder and appear out of contention for next Sunday’s final with a round still to play.
