DESIGNERS OF THE FUTURE

- ABIGAIL PETERSON ST MARGARET MARY’S COLLEGE

THE design and technologies students in year 9 at St Margaret Mary’s College were tasked with creating a T-shirt design promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and traditions.

My classmates and I especially enjoyed researching and bringing to life the designs, which required us to explore and validate many ideas to create impressive and culturally sensitive designs we really loved.

The process of design allowed us to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the importance of land and animals to their people.

Once we started designing, we engaged with the school’s First Nations Education Unit to ensure that our designs were culturally appropriate and requested feedback.

Once we had our designs approved, we moved on to creating a prototype. We used inks and fabric paints to do this.

This design challenge has not only extended our skills and abilities as designers, but has also allowed us to learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their cultures, and we now have some really cool T-shirts to show off for our hard work.

Design has really opened my eyes to all the possibilities and different branches you may want to choose for a career in the future.

Students can benefit so much from design and should certainly consider choosing it as a subject.
