LONDON: Scores of illegal immigrants, many of them young children, have been rescued by an RNLI lifeboat off the south coast of England as they attempted to cross the English Channel.

A packed lifeboat was pictured arriving on the beach at Dungeness in Kent before officials led the passengers away.

“This unacceptable rise in dangerous crossings is being driven by criminal gangs and a surge in illegal migration across Europe,” a local official said.

“We’re determined to target the criminals at every level,” he added.
