Chance to take look at trophy
NORTH Queensland rugby league fans will have the rare chance to see the NRL Premiership Trophy up close when it visits Townsville today.
The Provan-summons trophy will be showcased at the Junior Rugby League Grand Final day from 12pm-1.30pm before heading to Billabong Sanctuary from 2.30-3pm.
Former Cowboys player Glenn Hall will accompany the trophy to the Billabong Sanctuary before it heads back to Queensland Country Bank Stadium for the NRL finals double-header.
“This is a unique opportunity to see the NRL Premiership trophy in a truly historic year, when the entire finals series will be played in Queensland,” Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said.
“By hosting the NRL competition for months, Queensland has ensured the season could be completed so this is a great reward for the regional fans who are the heartbeat of the game.”
The trophy tour started on the Sunshine Coast and will also visit Rockhampton, Mackay, Redcliffe, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said the trophy tour was a rare opportunity for fans.
“This finals series is more than a grand final in Brisbane, it’s a four-week festival celebrating our fans right across Queensland,” he said.
