280 jobs on offer for mine
QUEENSLAND familyowned business Mackellar Group will undertake mining services at the Carmichael Mine for the next five years, fuelling demand for 280 fulltime jobs.
Bravus Mining and Resources, which previously operated as Adani Mining, has announced the contract with Mackellar as thermal coal prices continue to boom on the back of rebounding demand in electricity.
Bravus Mining and Resources CEO David Boshoff said that Mackellar Group had constructed the Central Queensland mining project to date, where a 10 million tonne per year open cut operation is now nearing production for export.
“Recruitment is already under way for more than 280 full-time employees with roles including haul truck drivers, maintenance workers and many other trades,” Mr Boshoff said.
“This is great news for Mackellar Group employees and contractors as it opens up long-term opportunities to work on this exciting project well into the future and builds upon the work of the MacKellar Group and Bravus teams.”
Mr Boshoff said on-site jobs would continue to operate as fly-in fly-out roles with Townsville and Rockhampton being the primary recruitment hubs, while they would also draw from towns including Clermont, Moranbah, Emerald and Charters Towers.
Mackellar Group managing director Duncan Mackellar said they were excited to be continuing their partnership with Bravus and to have the opportunity to build a dif
ferent work environment from what employees may have experienced in other big mining companies.
“We respect the knowledge, expertise and experience all our people bring to work and we want them to use that to drive innovation and create a great culture at the Carmichael Mine,” Mr Mackellar said.
“Importantly, we are talking about full-time secure work with these positions – these are opportunities for people and their families to put down permanent roots in
North and Central Queensland.” The company, which began in 1966, specialises in heavy earthmoving and has worked on mining and civil earthwork projects around Australia.
Mr Boshoff said that they had made good on promises on jobs and investment to Queensland and especially regional Queensland.
“We have created more than 2600 jobs and signed more than $2.2bn in contracts during this construction phase,” Mr Boshoff said.
“Now we are seeing hundreds of permanent jobs become available as we enter operations.
Thermal coal prices have tripled to more than $US177 a tonne ($240) in the past year on the back of surging demand for electricity, supply disruptions and drought in China knocking out hydroelectricity generation.
The first coal will be exported from the Carmichael mine before the end of the year.
