STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR LEGACY

-

SOUTHERN Cross C Catholic C h College has raised money for Legacy Week with one big community event for students and families.

The college has combined its two annual fundraising efforts with a fun run around the river, followed by a massive carnival on the school oval.

The proceeds from the day are going towards Legacy and the school’s Parents and Friends Association.

Defence School Mentor Kira Walshaw said year 10 students helped plan, organise and run the carnival games.

“In their planning, they had to consider the risks involved and organised their activity to be Covidsafe and any risks were managed using the Covid Safety Checklist,” she said.

“The Year 10 students are completing their Certificate II in Volunteering and this activity aligns perfectly to aid them in completing their certificate.”

Ms Walshaw said the college would not have been able to host the community fundraising event without the endless support from their P&F and all the parent volunteers.

“As a Defence School Mentor, my role is to provide support, information and referrals to all the ADF students and their families within the Southern Cross community, especially in times of posting and absences due to deployments and training exercises,” she said.

“As a college, we have a strong Defence demographic. We have a lot of families who have a family member who has served or who are currently serving.”

About 10 per cent of students are from a current ADF serving member family.

“By hosting this event during Legacy Week, we hope to bring awareness and fundraise for the Legacy charity,” Ms Walshaw said.

“This event is an opportunity for us as a college community to get together and have some fun through an otherwise difficult year due to the Covid restrictions.”
