Students smash their way to cricket glory
SIXES soared and fours flew as hundreds of students representing 12 Townsville primary schools unleashed their skills during a huge day of exciting cricket at Endeavour Park.
Twenty-six teams took on the challenge of the Queensland Cricket-organised event across three divisions, including Tier 1 Boys, Tier 1 Girls and a composite Mixed-tier 2 Boys grade.
“It was just non-stop action for six hours,” Queensland Cricket’s Antony Stewart said.
“The best part was seeing the smiles on so many of the students’ faces.
“Many hadn’t played cricket before at a competitive level, but that didn’t stop them from going out and having an absolute blast.”
While the day was about fun, it did turn a little more serious when being crowned champions went on the line.
Southern Cross defeated Ryan Catholic College in an exciting final to take out the Tier One Boys title, while the school’s Tier 2 Boys were also victorious in what turned out to be an absolute nailbiter.
Two other schools finished their four games unbeaten in Tier 2 Boys/mixed – Kirwan Primary and Bohle State School – but Southern Cross’s superior for and against secured them the overall victory.
It was almost as tight for the girls, too.
Cranbrook SS took the crown on percentage after they finished tied on wins with Mundingburra SS.
“Every division went down to the last game, which was super exciting,” Stewart said.
“Hopefully we’ll see plenty of the students decide to register for a Townsville club team when the new season starts in Term 4.”
