Guard slams cops over parking fine

- SHAYLA BULLOCH

A NORTH Queensland security boss has had a dig at police for giving him a parking fine rather than apprehending a potentially violent pub patron.

SRW Security Services owner Scott Worlein said it was “pretty poor” for local police to slap him with a parking ticket after he was called to a Queen St hotel at Ayr to kick out a banned patron.

Mr Worlein pulled into the hotel’s private carpark, admitted to parking across two spaces, and said he went inside to

try to remove a woman who was “banned” from Ayr establishments for assaulting a man at another pub.

She refused to leave, claiming she wasn’t banned, so Mr Worlein said he called in police to remove her from the pub.

“The police said they’d come down and they would breach her,” Mr Worlein said.

“I was waiting and waiting, and then saw them out in the parking area.”

The officers had given him a $55 parking ticket.

“They said ‘you can’t be parking like that’. I said ‘are you serious?’ I was in a rush to

get to the pub to remove this woman, and they fine me.

“Meanwhile, the sheila legged it.

“I think it’s pretty poor they are prioritising a minor traffic matter rather than someone who is capable of causing destruction and violence at a venue.”

It was not the first time Mr Worlein has spoken out about his issue with police at Ayr.

In April, Mr Worlein spoke to the Townsville Bulletin about his disgust that a woman who assaulted one of his staff was not charged.

Mr Worlein reported the incident to police, but the

perpetrators got off with a caution.

“It’s ridiculous, just disgusting,” Mr Worlein said at the time.

A Queensland Police spokesman said in a statement that the woman at the

Ayr hotel was doing nothing wrong.

“Investigations revealed no offences were committed by the woman and she had left the premises prior to police arrival,” the spokesman said.

“Police attended a hotel on Queen St, Ayr, on September 10 at the request of the hotel manager.

“When police arrived, they identified a traffic offence and issued an infringement to a 23-year-old man for parking improperly in a parking bay,” the spokesman said.

Mr Worlein intends to fight the parking fine.
