British rebels under Perkin Warbeck, son of a Flemish official pretending to be Richard Duke of York heir to the English throne, make an unsuccessf­ul attack on Exeter before turning towards Taunton.

An epidemic of bubonic plague breaks out in London. An estimated 100,000 people will die in what will become known as the Great Plague of London.

Frenchman Jean Thurel joins the Regiment de Touraine at the age of 18. He would live to the age of 108, spending about 75 of those years as a soldier.

President George Washington delivers his farewell address to the American people, announcing he will not stand for a third term. He was president since 1789.

Manfred von Richthofen, later known as ”The Red Baron”, wins his first aerial combat near Cambrai, France.

Academy award winning Australian cameraman Damien Parer (above) is killed while filming American troops at Peleliu in the Pacific.

Television series Mission Impossible premieres on CBS in the US.

Frankie

Vaughan, British 1950s matinee idol and crooner who starred opposite Marilyn Monroe in the 1960 film Let’s Make Love, dies aged 71. He had been dubbed Mr Moonlight after his hit song Give Me The Moonlight.

2001

The New York Stock Exchange reopens after a four-day shutdown, the longest break since the Great Depression. Wall Street suffered its biggest-ever points plunge following the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
