Dedicated health staffer earns praise for 35 years of service

-

AYR Health Service facilities support officer Rosemary Bengoa has been recognised for a remarkable three decades supporting healthcare in the Burdekin at the health service’s annual length-ofservice ceremony this week.

Ms Bengoa said she worked in retail before she moved into administration at the Ayr Health Service in 1985.

“I started out in reception and then went onto medical records and I enjoyed the interaction with the public and being able to assist in any way I could,” she said.

“Since then I’ve worked across administration and finance which has given me a lot of job satisfaction.

“My colleagues I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years have been a constant and I’ve really enjoyed the friendships I’ve

made – there’s a few of us oldies still here.”

Ms Bengoa said plenty had changed in healthcare during her 35 years in the sector.

“We’ve gone from handwritten ledgers and registers, cash pay envelopes, telex machines to many different computer systems,” she said.

“It’s certainly been a learning curve.

“The most important thing that remains the same though, especially in our rural hospitals, is the care and compassion given to the community and consumers on a daily basis by staff through the health service.”
