St Margaret Mary’s on the back foot

ST Margaret Mary’s College will have to fight from behind to defend its state title crown at the Champion Basketball Schools of Queensland tournament.

The Townsville basketball powerhouse struggled to fire in the opening round of the championsh­ip division on Thursday, falling to rival King’s Christian College 63-44.

Kaitlin West (12) and Elly Watson (11) led the way in attack for St Margaret Mary’s but the team struggled to overcome the range of King’s Rica Chanel EnriquezPa­ea, who dropped three bombs from beyond the arc.

St Margaret Mary’s will have a chance to avenge its first-round loss with a second-round doublehead­er on Friday against Moreton Bay College and Southport State High School.

Ignatius Park College also struggled in its first round, losing its opening two games of the tournament at the Gold Coast Sport and Leisure Centre.

Ignatius Park fell to Mountain Creek State High School 64-55 in its tournament opener before also going down to Trinity College, Beenleigh, 79-61 on Thursday afternoon.

Ignatius Park guard Murugu Kiumbura has led the way on the scoring front for the Townsville side, hitting double digits in both of its opening-round losses.
