FEENEY’S NEW LEASE

Blackhawks star transformed in second fullback crack ahead of finals

- NICK WRIGHT

BLACKHAWKS fullback Jaelen Feeney admits his first shot as a top-line fullback was marred by the pressures of being a fresh-eyed NRL debutant.

But things are different now. He is owning the No.1 jumper as he seeks to be the man who causes a Queensland Cup boilover.

Townsville will take on the Souths Logan Magpies in Sunday’s elimination final, with Feeney making his return after serving a one-week suspension. The former Newcastle Knight will line up at the back, with halfback Shaun Nona set to be given until just before kick-off to prove he has overcome a knee injury.

Utility back Carlin Anderson has been named on the bench, with Feeney an option to return to the scrumbase.

After last week’s loss to Wynnum Manly, Blackhawks coach Aaron Payne said his side missed Feeney’s direction, and his vocal presence would prove crucial in the do or die clash.

Feeney says that in the past he has shied away from the fullback role, adamant he was a half long-term. But he said in part that hesitation was due to his first experience in the position, back when he made his NRL debut for the Knights. It is a hesitation he no longer has.

And he credits Payne for helping him discover a love for the position that has him set to be a major part of the Blackhawks’ title push.
