The directors of W & F Constructions, Josh West and Steven Figg, take pride in all of their construction projects, regardless of size and type.

But the entire team is particularly proud of the outcome of the Home Hill Courthouse project.

“This one in particular, provided such a rare opportunity to provide our apprentices and other staff with experience on working on a refurbishment of such a prominent building for the area, to match the original works,” Josh said.

“We were able to deploy long term staff, who are Home Hill locals or previous Burdekin residents to work on the building which is one of significance to the local area.”

W & F Constructions’ site supervisor Eric Mann, who resides in Home Hill, was able to work through the project with his keen eye for detail, while providing an educational experience to the younger carpenters and apprentices on issues when working with heritage style buildings.

“It was a rare opportunity for all involved,”

Steven said. “The outcome of the project has provided the community and stakeholders with a refurbished building, ensuring further longevity and safety for all visitors.”

Works for this project included the removal and replacement of brick piers for the “Building of Local Prominence”, originally constructed in 1936.

“The piers were providing significant structural support to the overall building and any work on this element of a building, presents significant issues,” Josh said. “The sourcing of bricks to undertake these works presented a significant challenge. Original intentions to utilise refurbished removed bricks in the replacement piers proved unfeasible, as was the sourcing of bricks from the original factory. Local suppliers were tasked with identifying sufficient bricks of an appearance similar enough in size and colour to match the originals, during a time of Covid shutdown, which was a lengthy and challenging task.”

Sweetfm, a locally operated community radio station, remained operational throughout the course of all works.
