Cash for rest area revamp

-

ROADSIDE rest areas at Hughenden and Mareeba will be upgraded to help combat driver fatigue and make local roads safer.

The federal government has allocated the funding for the works from the Driver Reviver Site Upgrade Program.

Townsville-based Senator Susan Mcdonald said the money would be used to improve amenities and equipment like shelters, picnic tables, power and water facilities, barbecues, parking, lighting and kitchen facilities.

“September is Rural Road Safety Month, so I am pleased to announce more than $57,000 for a major upgrade of the Flinders Highway Rest Stop near Hughenden and $6500 for the Mareeba Heritage Centre rest area, which will encourage more drivers to pull in for … a break,” Senator Mcdonald said.

“Anyone who has used a Driver Reviver site knows how important and valued they are for safety and fatigue breaks, which is why our government is investing in them.

“This funding will also support our hardworking Driver Reviver volunteers who run the kiosks and offer friendly conversation to motorists.”
