WONDER STRIKE ON PREMIER LEAGUE DEBUT

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

A GOAL on Premier League debut is a momentous achievement, but to do it while icing a 4-1 semi-final win is a moment Brothers young striker Brianna Clancy won’t ever forget.

Clancy was mobbed by her teammates after letting loose on the wonder strike from well outside the 18 yard box.

It fizzed past Warriors standout goalkeeper Elli Chapple to hammer home the final nail in a dominant performance from the premiers.

Brothers captain Lara Seeger said it was a special moment for the club, and was proof their next-woman-up system was working.

The premiers have endured an upand-down finish to the Premier League season, after losing strike forward Emily Benton and midfielder Xanthe Dumbrrell.

But it has allowed the club to give more opportunities to their burgeoning women’s reserves ranks, something Clancy took full advantage of.

“I think everyone was ecstatic for

her to be honest. It is a big step coming up to Premier League, I am sure she was a bit nervous and didn’t know if she would fit in,” Seeger said.

“We have wanted to get her in for ages from one of our reserve teams. She came in today and did what she was meant to do. It was great.

“Luckily we have a huge squad around us. The idea is to fill in spots where we need it.

“It is good to have that back up, people to slot into those spots. People want to play in Premier League so when they do, they step up and take

their opportunities.” Seeger was easily Brothers best on ground, with her workrate in the middle of the field insurmountable.

The win over rivals Warriors earned Brothers a much-needed three-week reprieve before going into the North Queensland Football grand finals on October 9.

Warriors, who scored through a brilliant free kick from Premier League leading goal scorer Elly Caspanello, will have next weekend off before meeting MA Olympic in the preliminary final.
