STUDENTS LOVING THEIR PET PROJECT
TWO students from St Margaret Mary’s College have been getting close with dogs and cats at Townsville City Council’s Bohle Animal Care and Adoption Centre.
For the year 10 students it is part of a week-long work placement to complete their Certificate II in Skills for Work.
The centre’s programs manager Julie Austin said it had been fantastic to have the two students volunteer their time.
”These girls have come with a really can-do positive attitude so we have been very blessed to have their help last week,” Mrs Austin said. “They have been walking dogs, bathing dogs and grooming dogs. They have also been involved in training and teaching the adoption dogs how to sit and stay and act appropriately so it improves their chances of adoption later.”
Jessica Freeman has loved her time at the adoption centre but has yet to decide if she likes dogs more than cats.
“I have not made my mind up yet, they are both so cute,” she said.
“We have been able to walk the dogs, to give them a wash and interact with the cats whenever we want.”
For Eshana Gilbert a dog called Rocky stole her heart with his friendly nature and personality.
“He is one of the big dogs and he is about five years old and is really cute.”
After her stint at the centre she is considering a career path in animal care.
“After doing work experience I will definitely be looking down that path,” she said.
Mrs Austin said work experience at the centre was a great experience for those thinking of a career in animal welfare or the animal industry.
“It gives students a good grounding and a good experience in a broad range of activities to do with animals.”
