Students have right touch
ALMOST 20 teams turned out in force for yet another successful edition of the annual Macknade Touch Carnival, featuring senior and junior teams from primary schools in the Hinchinbrook Shire.
The tournament made a welcome return last week after it was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19, with Ingham State School almost claiming all four title wins.
In a closely fought and entertaining final, decided by a golden try, Junior A Lourdes All Stars defeated ISS Untaggables in overtime to deny their cross-town rivals a clean sweep at the competition.
Ingham State School’s Junior B Star Taggers, Senior B Lethal Taggers and the Senior A Avenger Taggers were comfortable winners.
Tournament co-ordinator and Macknade State School physical education teacher Trisha Phillips said the sport was increasingly popular in the Hinchinbrook, as reflected by the number of teams represented and the quality of the play on display.
Ms Phillips said touch was a great sport that could be played by boys or girls of any age or ability, and the junior touch competition in Ingham on Monday afternoons was full, with 170 participants.
“It helps if you are a fast runner but you don’t have to be one; there’s a role for everyone,” she said.
Ms Phillips thanked the volunteers, including from both Ingham high schools, local cane farmer Paul Marbelli and Hinchinbrook sport stalwart Joe Pennisi, both MSS old boys.
