PLANNED PROJECTS WILL REVITALISE OUR CITY
OUR city has again been the beneficiary of major events relocating for Covid over the last couple of months.
After the State of Origin in June, we’ve now been able to enjoy preliminary NRL finals games and international rugby tests – and our business community has benefited as well.
Our city continues to show what an international destination we can be as we welcome guests to these major events.
The last month has also seen important progress made on two projects that will create the biggest transformation of the Strand in decades and no doubt help us welcome more visitors in the future as our city’s tourism industry continues to grow.
The corner of Flinders St and The Strand has long had the opportunity to be a vital connector between the entertainment precinct, The Strand, and the Breakwater.
For too long it has been an unutilised eyesore and these three precincts have existed in silos.
The announcement that The Hive will proceed in their major redevelopment of this site – with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority as anchor tenants – is a fantastic outcome not just for the economy but for the placemaking it will enable in our city centre.
The additional piece in the puzzle of course is the major redevelopment of Reefhq.
We’re lucky to have this amazing aquarium experience in North Queensland and the long overdue upgrade it deserves enhances its must-visit status and helps us attract more visitors to the region.
Together, these projects will enable further revitalisation of the businesses around them.
Townsville has well and truly embraced the opportunities that being Covid-free in 2020 and 2021 have presented.
We look forward to seeing our city continue to welcome an increasing number of visitors in the future.
