Night bowlers take to greens at Gold City Bowls Club

- TRUDY BROWN

THE greens were bathed in bright light last Thursday at the Gold City Bowls Club’s first night bowls for the year.

There were only eight players in attendance, though the warm weather is expected to attract more members.

Despite the small numbers, Ross Kerr and Harry Bartlett played Shirley Gravenall and

Daniel Dunne in a pairs match.

The game was a close one, with Daniel and Shirley winning 18-15.

Maria Bartlett and Daniel Speer played Errol Shuttleworth and Bob Wine in the other game, which was also close, with Dan and Maria winning 20-19.

The annual general meeting was held on Sunday morning. All positions on the committee have been filled.

There were three rinks in use on Sunday afternoon.

On rink three, Ken Cowan, Verdie Truscott and Adrian Peno played Charlie Truscott, Grace Gleeson and Clint MacPherson.

The scores were even up to the smoko break when Adrian and his crew won six ends to win 21-12.

On rink four, John Lestone,

Laurie Laidlow and Tom O’brien were up against Denis Donaldson, Dan Speer and Arthur Balkin.

Luck was on Tom’s side and some unbelievable shots prevented Arthur from scoring.

Tom and his team won by a comfortable margin.

On rink five, Ken Peace, Bob Wine, Jack Scholes and Bill Bowen played Shirley Gravenall, John Sealy, Harry

Bartlett and Daniel Dunne.

Daniel held the lead for the first 12 ends, then finished the game by winning five ends in a row and the game by 10 shots to 12.

The spin of the board saw Tom O’brien’s team winning, but they could not spin the jackpot.

There were only 10 players on the green for Tuesday morning games.

Ken Cowan, Pam Norton and Mary Donaldson played Ken Peace, Verdie Truscott and Jack Scholes.

Mary and her team proved to be too strong for their opponents, winning easily.

Dennis Donaldson and Grace Gleeson went up against Wendy Thompson and Robyn Seibold.

Grace and Dennis held off their opposition to win 17-14.
