NORTH Queensland tourism operators will be able to secure new funding with a new round of federal and state grants.

Millions will become available to major tourism businesses as well as additional funding for small, medium and large operators.

Under the second round of the Tourism and Hospitality Sector Hardship Program, grants of $15,000, $25,000 and $50,000 will be available for small, medium and large employers across the state that have experienced a reduction in turnover of at least 70 per cent for at least seven consecutive days between July 1 and September 30.

An Iconic Tourism Grant worth up to $4m will be available to ensure major tourism enterprises remain viable and ready to scale up once visitation returns.

Q u e e n s l a n d Treasurer Cameron Dick said the funding would ensure Queensland retained its position as Australia’s premier holiday destination. “Because we have successfully kept Covid-19 out of our state, Queenslanders are free to travel within Queensland and support tourism businesses,” Mr Dick said.

“Our borders are open to tourists from South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.”

Federal Herbert MP Phillip Thompson (pictured) said businesses on Magnetic Island would be able to access some of the grants available. “Tourism businesses have been seeking support, asking for help,” Mr Thompson said. “I hate hearing the horror stories of family businesses that are about to go under.” Mr Thompson said as the country moved towards opening international borders, businesses needed to be able to ensure they were able to thrive.
