Man hit with fine for razors

- KATIE HALL

A MAN caught with razor blades in his pants after being “threatened” on a night out has been fined.

Deaton Thomas BickleyBialek, 24, pleaded guilty in Townsville Magistrates Court to one count of possession of a knife in a public place.

Police prosecutor Nathan Smith said Bickley-bialek had been seen in a toilet with razor blades. Police spoke with him and found five razor blades in his waistband.

Bickley-bialek said he had bought them for “protection” because of something that had happened earlier, and he didn’t want a man to “hurt him”.

Defence lawyer Patrick Staunton said Bickley-bialek had been out with colleagues from the army on a pub crawl on the night of the offence, but had been “threatened” by a person after being separated from his group.

Mr Staunton said BickleyBialek had joined the army in 2015 for one year before working setting up storage units, and had been affected by the death of his father in 2018.

Magistrate Ken Taylor fined Bickley-bialek $200, referred to SPER. A conviction was not recorded.
