WHITE LANDING BLOWS

-

NIC White looked every part the boxer in his stare down with the Springboks a fortnight ago, and it is the one-two punch he has formed with Tate Mcdermott that he believed could be a knockout blow against the Pumas.

White has retained the starting scrumhalf role in Townsville after he impressed coach Dave Rennie against the Springboks last week.

But he knows there are several players right behind him ready to take the spot if he slips. It is a friendly competition that has driven the playmaker to success.

“It is a one-two punch, and we are creating depth in all positions from one to 15. That is what we are going to need to go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the world,” White said. “It is taking our games, and Jake (Gordon) and Ryan (Lonergan), to another level. We need that competition for spots. It will drive everyone to another level. It is important.”

White has brought plenty of energy and emotion to the field in the two wins against the Springboks, typified by his aggression and constant niggling chat at the breakdown.

It is a trait he does not shy away from.

“I do play my best rugby when I am living on the edge,” he said. “It is a fine line I have to tread, but it is in the halfback’s DNA to not only bother the opposition but to make sure our blokes are on song.”
