PIRATE TREASURE TROVE

- EVAN MORGAN

TOWNSVILLE Maritime Museum will be overrun by budding pirates practising their best arghhhh and looking for treasure for the remainder of the school holidays.

They’ll also learn how to call landlubbers, “lily-livered bilge rats”, as they take their picture in a pirate hat next to a treasure chest at a ship’s steering wheel.

Museum curator Dr Robert De Jong said apart from the pirate trail other activities would include virtual reality headsets, shipwrecks and other hands-on activities where children could ring a bell or blow a foghorn.

“Children go on a pirate hunt looking for ship models with a skull and crossbones emblem on them while answering questions,” Mr De Jong said.

“There is also a ’Talk Like a Pirate’ fact sheet and a pirate mask that children can take home.

“There is VR for people to explore the Port of Townsville and there is also a VR headset to experience the inside of the SS Titanic.”
