City Lane’s plan change
PLANS for an extension to the popular City Lane precinct have been refined with changes to allow for more outdoor seating and the addition of a roofed walkway.
Townsville City Council has approved the changes in an application by developer Lancini Property Group.
The laneway opened in 2014 and has been the go-to dining and entertainment destination in the CBD.
But with shops, bars, restaurants and laneway created from an old retail building fronting Flinders St, the development is only partly complete and this next stage seeks to extend the concept through to Sturt St.
Development manager with Lancini Property Group Tomas Lancini said they were delighted changes to the $7m expansion had been approved. “We can now commence discussions with food and beverage operators that will complement the existing mix already on offer at City Lane,” Mr Lancini said.
“The approved expansion will provide customers and residents of the Townsville CBD with a new green space to meet and relax with family and friends, while helping to open a crucial pedestrian link between the existing laneway and Sturt St, further activating the space.”
The approved plans include extending the laneway from Flinders St through to Sturt St with an urban oasis-style civic square as the project’s centrepiece.
An additional 650sq m of food and beverage options and a new alfresco seating area will be provided.
The approved expansion will increase the iconic dining and entertainment precinct’s current size to a total of 1500sq m and will include three new tenancies.
The start of works will be dependent upon tenant precommitments.
City Lane offers Townsville’s only laneway experience with onsite parking and direct access to the CBD bus station.
The project has an estimated project value of $7m.
It will provide a 130sq m civic square with landscaping, trees and communal seating areas.
The 650sq m expansion will be integrated with the new civic square and extended laneway.
The development will also involve the relocation of Australia Post
Lancini Property Group has been planning the extensions for some time but revealed plans only last year.
