1732 JACQUES NECKER French finance minister
Necker served as finance minister to Louis XVI. In 1781, he made a decision to make the country’s budget public. He was dismissed from the position twice, the second a factor in causing the Storming of the Bastille in 1789.
1869 ERNIE JONES Australian cricketer
Jones played 19 Tests for Australia and took 64 wickets. He was the first Test player to be no-balled for throwing. It was in the Sceond Test against England in 1897/98. He had earlier been no-balled in a match for South Australia against the touring English team.
1924 TRUMAN CAPOTE American author
Capote began his writing career with short stories but is probably best known for his novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the novel In Cold Blood. His works have been adapted into more than 20 films and television dramas.
1928 ELIE WIESEL Auschwitz survivor
Wiesel and his family were sent to the German concentration camps in World War II. His parents and younger sister perished, but he and his two older sisters survived. In 1958, he published the book La Nuit, which was a memoir of his experiences.
1947 MARC BOLAN English musician
Bolan is known as one of the pioneers of the glam rock movement with his band T
Rex. His musical influence as a guitarist and songwriter inspired many later acts. Bolan died in a car crash two weeks before his 30th birthday.
1952 DARRELL HAIR Australian cricket umpire
Hair umpired his first Test match – between Australia and India – at Adelaide in 1992. In a 1995 match between Australia and Sri Lanka, he no-balled Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan seven times in three overs for throwing. Hair umpired 78 Test matches.

French actor
Cotillard’s first English language role was in the TV series Highlander.
She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role of Edith Piaf in the film La Vie en Rose.
