Wines hot tip to win club’s top gong
BROWNLOW Medallist Ollie Wines will be the hot favourite to add a John Cahill Medal to his trophy cabinet when Port Adelaide names it best and fairest player.
After a stellar campaign, in which he became the first Power player to win the Brownlow, Wines is also expected claim his inaugural John Cahill Medal on Thursday night.
Votes were cast following the completion of each game this year by a panel that included senior coach Ken Hinkley, senior assistant Michael Voss, each respective line coach and general manager of football Chris Davies.
Each player’s performance was rated between zero and five. A maximum of 20 votes and a minimum of zero were awarded to each player per game.
Defender Darcy Byrne-jones won last year’s award, but Wines’ main competition is expected to come from elsewhere. Travis Boak again had an outstanding year, while Aliir Aliir was an AllAustralian team member along with Wines, and Karl Amon made the 40-person squad.
Charlie Dixon’s team-first attitude and strong year in his contested game – he was second for marks in 2021 – will have him high up in calculations.
Willem Drew also had a breakout year in the Port Adelaide midfield.
