QUEENS OF THE DESERT HEAD TO TOWNSVILLE

- EVAN MORGAN

A SHOW bigger than “Ben-hur” is about to hit Townsville’s Civic Theatre.

The North Queensland Opera and Musical Theatre Company’s production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert promises to shake that groove thing as audiences follow the camp adventures of Bernadette, Mitzi and Felicia aboard Priscilla.

It will be the show’s premiere in Townsville with previous productions held in capital cities.

Director Kevin Wright was excited Priscilla was finally hitting Townsville after it was delayed by Covid last year.

“It is fantastic, because theatre companies are always looking for something new and exciting, so when we found out about the Priscilla release we grabbed it with both hands and ran,” Mr Wright said.

The show marks the directorial debut for Mr Wright.

“That is a massive honour to be asked to direct anything, but to be asked to direct something this big and this epic is an absolute honour. I am so happy and so moved to be doing this,“he said.

“It is bigger than Ben-hur, we have got every sequin in North Queensland rounded up and on the stage. We were expecting many sold-out performances before we even go curtain up.

“Grab whatever tickets are left Townsville it is going to be big.”
