Genex picks Tesla battery for new storage project
ONE of Queensland’s first stand-alone large scale battery storage systems will be a Tesla Megapack and installed near Rockhampton.
Renewable energy developer Genex Power announced on Friday it had signed a supply agreement with Tesla Motors Australia for its Bouldercombe Battery Project.
Genex CEO James Harding said Tesla was selected because of its strong technical and commercial offering, extensive experience in the Australian energy storage market and market leading Autobidder market dispatch technology.
The project will be developed using Tesla’s Megapack lithium-ion battery technology, which has a product lifespan and warranty of 20 years.
Megapack is an all-in-one utility-scale energy storage system optimised for cost and performance, with each Megapack assembled, factory tested and shipped from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada in the US. The 50MW/100MWH battery will comprise of 40 Megapacks and is expected to be fully operational in the first half of 2023. Mr Harding said Genex was working with stakeholders to conclude the outstanding elements of the project to reach financial close in the coming months.
“This is a key milestone in the project’s development and one the company has been working towards since Tesla’s appointment as the preferred supplier and integrator in 2020,” he said.
“The Bouldercombe Battery Project is to be one of the first stand-alone largescale battery energy storage systems in Queensland.”
