Man dies in crash, girl left badly hurt
AN 11-year-old girl is still fighting for her life after a horror fatal crash at Erakala near Mackay as police search for a specific witness who may have been first on the scene.
A 59-year-old Townsville man had been riding a motorcycle with the girl on the back when it and a dual cab ute collided just before 2pm on Saturday.
The man died at Mackay Base Hospital after paramedics rendered first aid at the scene.
The 11-year-old girl was flown to Townsville University Hospital where she was in a critical condition on Sunday night.
Forensic Crash Unit officers are now appealing for an elderly man driving a green Ford utility east on Sugarshed Rd to come forward.
Police believe he may have been one of the first motorists to come across the scene and may have information that could help.
Investigators are asking the man, or anyone else with information, to come forward.
Multiple police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the crash site on Sugarshed Rd, near the Ridolfis Rd turn
offoff. The motorcycle and ute had been travelling in the opposite direction when the crash occurred about 1.45pm. Paramedics were called about 1.50pm.
The 30-year-old male driv
er of the dual cab ute was not physically injured but was taken to hospital for observation.
Photographs show the impact between the two vehicles, which caused significant damage to the front of the ute.
Forensic Crash Unit officers were on the scene inspecting the wreckage before both the ute and bike were removed from the site.
Police crews had blocked off Sugarshed Rd and were maintaining an exclusion zone from the crash, directing traffic away from the site.
The road was closed from the Mackay Bypass Rd intersection to the Sugarshed and Farleigh-dumbleton roads intersection for about three hours.
Forensic Crash Unit officers are investigating the cause of the crash.
