A flock of camels has their bags packed and is ready for adoption from Bendigo animal shelter Matty’s Sanctuary, which has experienced a recent influx of the gentle mammals.
The dairy industry has a surplus of male camels and is keen to rehome big movers including Humphrey and Lawrence, says sanctuary owner Matthew Glascott.
“We’ve had a pretty big influx of animals and it’s been difficult to adopt because of the pandemic … we want to help them get adopted so we can keep bringing animals into the sanctuary,” he said.
Mr Glascott said there were important requirements for prospective owners to meet.
“They are herd animals – they really want company and they can’t be spending much time out on their own, we will adopt them out in pairs,” he said.
“We will make sure you know all the feeding and care requirements, and they can grow up to a tonne (1000kg) so it’s important to be aware of that.”
Low in fat and lactose, camel milk has become increasingly popular, both as a drink and as a key ingredient in beauty products.
Camel Milk Co runs the largest camel dairy farm in Victoria, with a herd of more than 70 camels near Kyabram.
