Son’s podium finish a fitting side note to Moon memorial

-

ON a special night celebrating the life of North Queensland speedway champion Gary Moon 10 years after his death, his son, Tyler, finished on the podium in the main event.

The annual Gary Moon Memorial has been held at the Bowen Showgrounds since his death in 2011, and North Queensland Speedway Riders and Supporters secretary Samantha Van Eerde said this year’s event had a special feel to it.

“It is always an honour to host such an important event for all of Gary’s family, friends, fellow competitors and supporters,” she said.

“This meeting marked the 10th anniversary since Gary’s passing, so it was more special than ever. Gary was known by all as a fun loving and fair racer whose determination behind the bars was unparalleled.

“He had a career spanning some 25 years which included multiple national and Queensland championships, and a world championship.”

The ‘Moon Man’ memorial night has grown a reputation for providing some of the best sidecar racing in the North. This year was no different.

There was a great turnout of spectators to watch top-class riders and their passengers go bar to bar in the fight to take out this prestigious trophy.

Brodie Cohen and Josh Murray emerged victorious after a night of hard-fought battles.

Stuart Firth and Jason Martin finished second, while in a touching moment, Tyler Moon and Adam Lovell finished third.

The smiles on the podium showed how much the meeting meant to these riders and passengers.

The Junior Solos also had some great battles during the night, with promising Townsville-based junior Neiko Donovan making it count in the final to take the win from Ky Mitchell, Beau Baker and Corbin Reid.

The club has now turned its focus to this weekend’s Queensland Sidecar Championships which will be the final event of the year at the Bowen Showgrounds.

The night promises to be another cracker.

Gates open at 4.30pm, with racing set to start at 6.30pm.
