FAMILY’S FURY OVER FAILURES WHICH LED TO THEIR SON’S DEATH

- SHAYLA BULLOCH

IN the final moments of Tom Davy’s life, he spent his last reserves of energy putting a man he barely knew before himself.

This is how his heartbroken family want the Alva Beach double stabbing victim to be remembered after the highly anticipated findings into the deaths were released on Wednesday.

Mr Davy’s sister Katie Davy said the only positive thing to come out of the damning findings was the show of her brother’s “true character”.

“He would only ever do something to help somebody else,” she said.

“The only reason for him to have been at that house was to aid Candice.”

Mr Davy and Corey Christensen were stabbed in the chest by Dean Webber on October 1, 2018, after they forced their way into Mr Webber’s Alva Beach house.

Inside was Mr Davy’s girlfriend, Candice Locke, who was taken in by Mr Webber when she knocked on his door with an injured shoulder.

Deputy State Coroner Jane Bentley found that Mr Davy and Mr Christensen would still be alive if police had done their job properly.

Katie and her parents Heather and Neil Davy read through the 55-page findings from their New South Wales home on Wednesday, saying they’d been let down by everyone involved.

“If they’d done their job, none of this would have happened,” Katie said.

“My brother was killed and no one has been held accountable for that.”

Coroner Bentley also found that Mr Webber was in fear of his life when the men came to his house.

The Davy family said this finding was hard to swallow considering “inconsistencies and conflicting accounts” throughout the inquest in October last year.

They questioned why Mr Webber’s character was not probed similarly to that of Louis Bengoa, who Coroner Bentley labelled as an “unhelpful witness”.

Coroner Bentley also gave a neverbefore-heard insight into Mr Davy’s final moments.

In the findings, she referenced a triple-0 call Mr Davy made at 12.58am after he was stabbed, where he was unable to say anything other than the fact he was at Alva Beach before he collapsed.

“It is likely that, in his last moments, Mr Davy was concerned not only for his own welfare but also that of Mr Christensen and exhausted his last reserves to walk to where he was lying and call an ambulance,”

Coroner Bentley said.

Katie said these final moments were how she wanted her brother to be remembered.

“He was a beautiful brother … I can’t imagine his thought process at that time.”

The family intend to study the findings with their lawyers over the next few days before deciding their next move, but said it ”definitely” wasn’t over.

Mr Christensen’s wife Jaye was at the Brisbane Coroners Court on Wednesday when the findings were handed down.

Outside court, her lawyer Nick Dore said Mrs Christensen wanted time to digest the 55-page coronial report before she commented on the findings.

Mr Dore said Mrs Christensen wanted to thank everyone who had supported her since her husband’s death.
