MASSIVE CROC SPOTTED IN NORTH QUEENSLAND CREEK

- SATRIA DYER-DARMAWAN

RANGERS are in Groper Creek trying to find a “five metre crocodile” spotted on Monday afternoon which was terrorising locals and was “showing aggressive tendencies”.

Groper Creek Caravan Park manager Jeanette Garvey described the crocodile as mesmerising.

“It would have been close to five metres if not more, there was a good crowd watching it,” Ms Garvey said.

“There were people coming and

going everywhere on Monday and he just hung around the whole afternoon and whole day probably for a good few hours or more.

“He was wallowing up and down and would go under the water for 5-10 minutes, and sure enough he would pop his head up again.

“He wasn’t scared of anyone, he was also showing aggressive tendencies, we had to warn a lot of people that were returning from fishing not to get out of their boats.

“He was also attracted to the

people throwing bait off the jetty and seemed to be hanging around the steps.

“Whenever there was movement he seemed to go towards that and then he wasn’t very pleasant at all.

“No one has ever seen a croc here before, he has been spotted a few times up and down, but for him to be staying that long for that amount of time, was deeply concerning.

“He’s obviously been here for many decades, but people just need to be aware.”

Ms Garvey encouraged people to be crocwise and report crocodile sightings if they came across them.

Member for Burdekin Dale Last urged everyone within the vicinity to use extreme caution and to ensure that others were also doing the right thing.

“Obviously a large crocodile lurking near a public boat ramp and fishing area is a major concern,” Mr Last said.

“The safety of the people who use Groper Creek must be the priority in this case. It is as simple as that.”
