STABBING ‘DEFINITELY NOT’ RANDOM

- SHAYLA BULLOCH

A MAN has been placed in an induced coma after he was stabbed in the neck during a suspected street meet-up gone wrong.

Police and paramedics were called to Lancaster St at Garbutt about 8.15pm on Thursday night where a 35year-old man was bleeding out on the road after being stabbed.

Emergency crews flocked to the area and created a large crime scene, which stretched to Halifax St.

It’s understood the man and a group of people arrived at the street in a vehicle and the victim got out and walked away from the group to meet someone.

The details of the attack are unclear but by the time the victim’s mates caught up with him, he was lying on the ground and bleeding from the neck. The man who stabbed him had already run off.

Photos from the scene show a large number of detectives, including the dog squad, saturating the area.

They remained at the crime scene for most of the night and into Friday morning.

Police believe the victim and the attacker are known to each other.

Townsville District detective Acting Inspector Dean Cavanagh said officers were looking into every scenario, including organised

crime or drugs.

“Forensic officers have gone through every piece of evidence to determine what has occurred,” Inspector Cavanagh said.

“Full details will be known

when we can get a detailed version (from the victim).”

The man suffered a significant amount of blood loss after he was stabbed near the left side of the clavicle bone. The weapon

partially severed a carotid artery, a major blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain.

He was rushed to hospital and had surgery last night.

The weapon has not been recovered.

Inspector Cavanagh said it was “definitely not” a random incident.

He urged any witnesses to come forward to police.
