Own nice slice of barra-dise

- SAMANTHA HEALY

WELCOME to Barra-dise! If you love to fish, this could be the property for you.

Located at 7 Fourth Avenue in South Townsville, this 1176sq m property backs on to the Ross River, and it boasts its own concrete boat ramp, private jetty and riparian water rights.

On the market for the first time ever, Explore Property agent Giovanni Spinella went so far as to pop on the captain’s hat and hitch a ride on a tinnie to explore the listing.

“Imagine waking up in the morning, brewing a steaming flask of coffee, waltzing from your deck into the backyard, heading straight down your boat ramp and jumping in for the easiest fishing trip you have ever experienced in your life,” he said.

The river, which snakes its way through the garrison city from the dam to the ocean, is a popular barra hot spot, with local groups often restocking the waterway with the prized catch.

“Whether you’re a large family looking for a split-level home, or a keen boatie looking to live the dream without having to win the lottery, this home has something for everyone,” the listing says.

The house itself was relocated from Charters Towers, west of Townsville, in 1906 and has been lovingly restored.

It was raised in 2002 and in 2011 the area underneath was built-in to create a fully contained, modern guest wing complete with three rooms, a second kitchen, an internal laundry, bathroom and separate living area.

Upstairs, the balustrades and staircase have been made from repurposed timber from the port and there is also a laser cut marlin on the landing.

There are polished wood floors, period features including VJ walls and high ceilings with ornate ceiling fans and airconditioning.

There are three bedrooms including a master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, a large dining space and kitchen and a large living room.

Off this level there is a back deck overlooking the river and with views of the city, Castle Hill, Mt Stuart, and surrounds.

But it is the rear of the block “where the magic happens”.

Besides the boat ramp and jetty, there is also a huge shed and a deck with a pergola and fire pit.

“Enjoy all the city has to offer and then come home to throw the crab pot in!” the listing says.

The property will go to auction on Sunday at 10.30am.

Mr Spinella said there had been “huge interest” in the property, with 49 groups through at the first open home alone.

“And it has been 20-plus every weekend since then,” he said.

Mr Spinella said the property was one of only two that he knew of in the region that had a certified and legal boat ramp, with the other one at Bushland Beach.

He said the same owners had enjoyed the Fourth Avenue property for over 20 years, regularly catching muddies from their private jetty.
