Gala kicks off at last

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

HALF a century’s worth of achievements and memories will be celebrated when MA Olympic holds its longawaited 50-plus Gala Dinner.

The club is putting a call out to all current and former players to come along and share tales from years gone by and perhaps reconnect with old friends.

Starting its life out in 1958 as International Soccer Club, the club was renamed Olympic FC in 1960, and in 1967 another club came along called Mundingburra United SC.

The two clubs eventually merged in 1993 and in 1995 Aitkenvale was also amalgamated to form MA Olympic FC.

“Anyone who has been around for the last 40-50 years, we want them to come along and celebrate,” MA Olympic president James Wallace said.

“We have people from all over the state coming along and all our life members will be there.

“There has been a lot of success and a lot of history at the club and we want everyone who has been involved to celebrate.”

The gala will also celebrate another chapter of the club’s history, with MA

Olympic to shift from its current home at Burt St in Mundingburra to the Murray Sports Complex next year.

Wallace said club members had spent many hours researching the club’s history in preparation for the big night.

“We’ve spent a lot of time at libraries and going back through old newspaper articles,” he said.

“It’s been very interesting going back and looking at what the club has achieved. It makes you really appreciate the work that has gone into making the club what it is today.

“Our club was started in the late 1950s by a group of friends; today we have more than 500 members.”

Wallace said the gala was about three years in the making and members and players had been waiting patiently for the big night.

“With Covid we had to postpone our original gala but now we’re full steam ahead,” he said.

“It will be a great night and an opportunity for current and past players to look back on memories they’ve shared with the club.”

MA Olympic’s 50-Plus Gala Dinner is being held on November 13 at The Ville Resort-casino.
