The Royal Navy officer became the founding governor of the Colony of New South Wales. He was the commanding officer of the First Fleet, a fleet of 11 ships, which arrived on Australia’s shores in 1788.

Wlliams was the founder of the Young Men’s Christian Associatio­n, the oldest and largest youth charity in the world. Its aim is to support young people to belong, contribute and thrive.
