Townsville champion returns to the NBL

- NICK WRIGHT

THE timeless run of Townsville basketball legend Peter Crawford continues, with the former Boomer making his return to the NBL.

While the 41-year-old still takes to the court with the Heat in the NBL1 North, Crawford will take a place on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the Brisbane Bullets in the 2022 season.

Crawford has developed his coaching by mentoring the junior ranks in North Queensland, while he has also tried his hand leading state outfits.

With more than 450 NBL games to his credit with the Townsville Crocodiles and Perth Wildcats, Crawford’s knowledge of the competition and the game itself is set to make him a valuable addition to the Bullets line up.

“It’s super exciting to be involved in the NBL, something I got to be a part of for 17 years and now give back to the sport that’s given me so much,” Crawford said.

“As a coach, it’s awesome to have the opportunity to pass on the things I learnt from the great coaches and players that have been around and helped me along the way.

“The Bullets are an iconic brand all over Queensland, within the whole basketball community and a huge part of what makes the NBL what it is today. It’s really cool to be involved and have a chance to be a part of that.

“I love QLD and I know how much Brisbane love the Bullets, so it’s an honour to be joining the Bullets family.”

Brisbane head coach James Duncan said having a man of Crawford’s esteem was only part of the appeal, with the champion big’s ability to connect with players a particular trait he was eager to witness in action.

“His experience as a former NBL player and Olympian will bring great value to the coaching staff,” he said.

“He’s since been doing great work as a coach for Basketball Queensland programs and has a great ability to connect with players.”
