Queensland schools to get doctors

-

HEATLEY Secondary College is one of 50 Queensland schools set to offer free doctor appointments to students at school next year.

A pilot program of GPS in schools was announced by the state government earlier this year, with schools invited to register their interest in the initiative.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said after being “inundated with requests”, the program was boosted from 20 schools to 50.

Thuringowa MP Aaron Harper said the region’s kids had “done it tough” over the past two years and it had placed extra pressure on students.

“Being able to have access to a GP within the school environment is important,” Mr Harper said.

“This is important that we have that ability to provide our kids in schools with access to health advice, which is a real positive for their mental health and wellbeing.”

Fit-for-purpose clinics will be created on site at the schools, with doctors available one day a week for free consultations for students.
