Keeping cool key for Tigers
EDGE Hill United coach Jo Ward always knew her team had the weaponry to claim the FNQ Women’s Premier League championship.
At halftime, leading 2-1 against a spirited Leichhardt side, Ward brought her team together and kept the message clear and simple with just two words: stay calm.
Now they will face off against Townsville Brothers yet again for the Crad Evans Shield next week, all livestreamed online at the T o w n s v i l l e Bulletin.
“We have goals in us so if we stayed calm, things would go our way when we get back to our game, and things would start going our way,” Ward said. “I knew we had it in us. It’s a grand final, if you don’t have it here, you probably don’t have it.”
Her Tigers responded to cement their place as the best team in the competition, claiming the double with a 4-1 win, while giving themselves a chance to make history in the Crad Evans this Saturday.
Edge Hill United has made no secret of its desire to be the first FNQ team to claim a treble in years, and it will have a chance to do so on its home turf this week.
Ward, Macken and the team celebrated on Saturday but will be back at training this week focused on claiming a third piece of silverware and ending 2021 on top of the NQ football world.
In the men’s side of the prestigious shield, Townsville’s MA Olympic will also face off against Edge Hill.
It would put the final cherry on top of what has been a remarkable comeback to coaching by former Northern Fury mentor Paul Roncato, who has led an often unbreakable defensive unit throughout the 2021 campaign.
