Man had gash on head
A POST-MORTEM of a body found in a Townsville creek will be crucial in helping police piece together the man’s final moments.
The 48-year-old was pulled from Ross Creek about 5pm on Sunday after a person passing on a boat spotted the body floating near mangroves.
Police are not clear about what happened to the Townsville man in his final moments alive, but revealed he had a gash to his head.
Townsville Detective Acting Inspector Dean Cavanagh said that more would come to light in the next couple of days.
“A post-mortem will be done and medical experts will provide their insight,” Inspec
tor Cavanagh said. “Detectives will continue to investigate all avenues.”
Emergency crews were called to the area near Ross St, near the Magnetic Island car ferry terminal, where the body was spotted on Sunday by a person on a ferry.
Police worked with specialist Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews to bring the man to
shore as his body was in a “difficult and dangerous position”.
Photos from the scene show police inspecting riverbeds before fire crews pulled the body from the water.
Crews remained at the scene for some time before an undertaker picked up the man’s body.
A few hours later, the man was formally identified by
police and his next of kin was contacted. It is understood the man had a Townsville address, and was not living on a boat at the time of his death.
Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick, who was on scene on Sunday afternoon, said police were starting from scratch at the scene, and had no idea of the timeframes involved.
Police said his death was not suspicious.
