MUNICH COMES TO THE CITY

- KATIE HALL

FLINDERS Street was turned into little Munich on Saturday, as hundreds descended on the city centre in their lederhosen and dirndls.

The Oktoberfest celebration was a monumental success with more than 1000 people through the gates for the yearly event, as litres of beer and kilograms of pretzels made their way into revellers’ hands.

The event, which had to be postponed for a few weeks due to Townsville’s Covid scare, was a massive hit with plenty of punters wetting their whistle on an extremely warm Townsville spring day.

The Brewery co-owner Phil Bredhauer said he couldn’t choose a top moment between the best-dressed and eating competitions, and federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, tapping the keg.

Mr Bredhauer said it was great to see the crowd take to the dancefloor this year, and said he already had fresh plans for next year’s event including performances by traditional German bands.
